THE  AREA

La Herradura is a traditional Spanish fishing village nestled amongst the mountain range and Mediterranean. Steeped in history, it was where the Spanish Armada sheltered and perished in the eye of a ravaging storm.

The Moors left their stamp on the landscape; and historic wars have left us with a local fort in La Herradura (now a museum) and watch towers on the crests of the Punta de la Mona and Cerro Gordo headlands overlooking the village and bay.

The village is only 55mins from Malaga Airport and 65mins from Granada Airport. The ski Resort of Sierra Nevada is only 115mins away door to slope meaning you really can Sun, Sea & Ski in one day from November through to April.

Punta de la Mona is the exclusive headland which overlooks the bay and village and hosted the holiday homes of notable Spanish families from Madrid and Granada, as well as ambassadors, famous musicians and artists (the world-famous guitarist Andres Segovia lived here, and he is commemorated in an annual International Guitar Competition, held in the Civic Centre).

Flecha Negra and Flecha Blanca enjoy an unrivalled position on the Punta de La Mona overlooking not only the bay but also the mountains that rise up into the surrounding countryside.

The properties are only a 15 minute walk to the beach, and are south-westerly facing to the Mediterranean. The sunsets have to be seen to be believed. Flecha Blanca sleeps 8 and is set amongst lush tropical plants and citrus trees with views across the bay and Mediterranean. Flecha Negra sleeps 10 - 11. Both properties can accommodate small bespoke events and commercial launches, either jointly or separately: they are also available for filming and media usage subject to certain terms and criteria.

La Herradura boasts one of the best scuba diving experiences on the Spanish coast and the surrounding sea is a protected Marine sanctuary. Private yacht and boat hire is available from Marina Del Este just 5 minutes from the Villas. Nerja is just a 15 minute drive away, and the historic Malaga city centre 45 minutes, both via the scenic coastal motorway.

There are numerous other sporting activities available in the area; to name but a few - kayaking, surfing, sailing, paragliding, walking, golf, off-road quads or mountain bikes, windsurfing and fishing.

Dining options

La Herradura, Almuñécar and Nerja offer plenty of eating options and we recommend the following:

DEKATO is new to the bay and serves up asian fusion dishes, Txoco, Cafe Paraiso, Distinto and so many others we suggest for quality evening dining; and the other two options are more casual. Sardinia is probably the best of the many beach chiringuito bar/restaurants for lunch. For special events we recommend Olivio & Bakus in Nerja, & Fyrmvm in Almuñécar.

The pick of the coffee/breakfast bars are Cafés Szimple and Lisboa for breakfasts and juices

In summer we suggest booking any restaurant: telephone numbers can be easily be found online.

Beaches

La Herradura beach is a 15 minute walk down the hill via the shortcut - follow the road to the end where the clearing is. You will see the bin area to the left side and behind that is a small road; follow the road around the bend where there is a small private beach area surrounded by rocks on the most easterly section of the bay; it’s a little stony - but other beaches include Cantarrijan a short drive away, and Burriana beach at Nerja which is sandy but gets very busy in summer.

All major rental companies and many local ones are available at Malaga Airport: the best deals tend to be from brokers like doyouspain.com - but avoid high insurance charges by buying your own collision damage waiver insurance before you leave home.
